Indonesia's monkeys need protection
Dr. Ir. Siti Nurbaya Bakar Minister of Environment and Forestry Indonesia Dear Minister: I was shocked to learn that during 2022, the US imported hundreds of wild-caught long-tailed macaques from Indonesia. Disturbing video footage, previously released by Action for Primates, showed the brutality and inhumanity to which these sentient animals are subjected during their capture, with nursing infants forcibly separated from their mothers and the killing of 'unwanted' males. The conservation status of the long-tailed macaque was recently increased to 'Endangered' by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) on its Red List of Threatened Species. Threats faced by wild populations of the long-tailed macaque, and taken into consideration as part of the assessment, include habitat loss, the trade in long-tailed macaques for research and testing, capture for the 'pet' trade and for filming torture videos to post on social media and killing because of negative interactions with people. I urge you to 1) stop the capture and export of long-tailed macaques, 2) enact legislation that provides protection for this indigenous and endangered species, and 3) adopt humane and preventative methods that can be used to resolve undesirable interactions between monkeys and people, without resorting to the killing or the capture and export of macaques for use in laboratories.
