Concerns for monkeys in Mauritius
Pravind Kumar Jugnauth Prime Minister Mauritius Dear Prime Minister: I am writing to express my concern regarding the export of long-tailed macaques, including those trapped in the wild, from Mauritius to suppliers and laboratories in the USA and Europe. I am dismayed that these sentient and intelligent monkeys can be ripped from their homes and families, and exported to laboratories, or imprisoned for years in concrete breeding facilities and their offspring exported. I appeal to Mauritius to end this cruel and inhumane treatment of long-tailed macaques and introduce legislation to protect them. Please be aware that the international reputation of Mauritius as a holiday 'paradise' continues to be tarnished by the appalling way it treats its long-tailed macaque population. Sincerely,

Long-tailed and pig-tailed macaques and USFWS
Martha Williams Director US Fish and Wildlife Service Dear Director Williams: I am writing to urge USFWS to add long-tailed and pig-tailed macaques to the list of endangered species, with full protection under the Endangered Species Act (ESA). Both species are widely exploited and face multiple threats from human activities, including from US laboratories. As the leading importer in long-tailed macaques, the US is a major player in the global trade, a trade which is having such a devastating impact on the species and its wild populations. The future of these intelligent non-human primates, who play an important role in biodiversity and ecosystems, is seriously under threat. They will continue to be decimated as long as the research industry is allowed to continue importing them. Please ensure their protection under the authority of the ESA. Sincerely,
